Intrinsic motivators are coming from inside an individual and are driven by interest.

The psychological needs that underlie intrinsic motivation are the need to feel competent, relatedness, and to have meaningful relationships with other people. Psychologists call that self-determination.

They can be tied together with extrinsic motivators to give feedback to a player. Countless studies have shown that there is a certain risk by using extrinsic motivators to drive intrinsic motivations. using extrinsic motivators can lead to decreased interest in a task or topic and thus reduce the intrinsic motivation with a long lasting effect.
